Polymers have become an indispensable part of everyday life. However, the current polymers represent only a small fraction of the huge number of polymers that theoretically exist. Prof. Dr. Christopher Kuenneth at the University of Bayreuth, Germany, together with research partners in Atlanta, USA, have now developed a digital system that promises extraordinarily high economical, technological and ecological benefits: from around 100 million theoretically possible polymers, their system can precisely select those materials that have an ideal property profile for targeted applications at unprecedented speed. A world in which digital innovations are used responsibly both for individuals and for the economy and society as a whole – this is the goal and mission statement of the FIM Research Institute for Information Management, the opening ceremony for which was held at the University of Bayreuth on 7 July 2023.

The University of Bayreuth and the Technical University of Applied Sciences Augsburg have now become the responsible bodies for the research institute, as they recently signed in a joint cooperation agreement in Bayreuth. Thus, the history of the core research centre Finance & Information Management (FIM), founded in 2002, will now be continued on a new basis and brought forward into the future.

Thus, for the first time, nanotransporters that are being developed for a specific therapy of septic liver failure can be tested on healthy subjects in a clinical setting.

Prof. Dr. Christoph Helbig, Chair of Ecological Resource Technology at the University of Bayreuth, is investigating framework conditions and measures for the circular economy on an international level in his latest project, using the example of electronics and electric vehicle batteries. The goal is to come up with concrete proposals for a more efficient and environmentally friendly circular economy.

When talking about the climate crisis, global inequalities or access to education, sustainable thinking and acting seems to be the ubiquitous solution to the problems., Dr. Karsten Gäbler and Prof. Dr. Uwe Hoßfeld from the University of Jena focus on whether there is a magic formula behind the term or a marketing tool in a publication that has just appeared. Together, the two scientists published the brochure “Sustainability”, which is aimed at the general public, on behalf of the Thuringia State Center for Civic Education.
